A couple years ago a friend of mine contacted me to ask me who I thought the top Florida attorney was.  When I questioned why she was looking for an attorney she described receiving an authentic looking check in the mail with a letter stating it was prize winnings.  She brought it directly to the bank it was drawn from and they cashed it without question.  Apparently, about 2 weeks later she received a phone call from a police officer telling her the check she cashed was fraudulent and he needed to speak to her because she will be responsible for returning the money.  My friend told me she had already spent it paying her mortgage and wanted to get an attorney because she did not feel it was right to expect her to pay for it.  After speaking to the attorney I suggested my friend called to say it hadn’t gone well and there was nothing she could do but pay the money back.
